Flyfishing Championship & More
National championships to come to Colorado in 2006

National Championship
The National Fly Fishing Championship & Conservation Symposium sponsored by Colorado Trout Unlimited and associated TU chapters across the state will be held in Colorado on June 1 to June 4 of 2006. It constitutes the final round of the three regional competitions. Fifteen of the competitors will be chosen to represent the United States in an Olympic style event in Portugal during August of 2006.
Most of the 28 member countries compete annually in the World Championship conducted under the direction of the International Federation of Sport Fly Fishing.
The National Championship will consist of 9 to 12 teams of five members each. Six of the teams will come from winners of the regional events, two from Team USA 2005, two international teams, and two non-sanctioned teams from Colorado (participating for fun and placement).

If you are interested in one of the openings for Team USA you need to apply for a spot in one of the Regional Competitions - www.flyfishingteamusa.com

¥ Western Regional October 29, 30, 2005 Fresno California
¥ Eastern Regional April 29, 30 2006 Michigan
¥ Midwestern Regional March 31 through April 1, 2006 Salt Lake City, Utah
¥ North American Finals June 1, 2, 3 and 4, 2006 Boulder, Colorado

Team USA is guided by Jack Dennis and a Board of Directors. The list of sponsoring companies is a whoÕs who directory of the fly fishing industry.

Regional competitors will fish 4 different venues (stream & lake) over a two day period. Each session is three hours long with each fish measured and counted by an assigned judge. International rules and scoring will be used. Only 48 anglers will accepted in each Regional.
The National Championship & Conservation Symposium headquartered in Boulder will include a series of special events, clinics, youth & conservation programs, an opportunity to fish with team members, and more. The event is designed to:

1. Create major funding opportunities for Colorado Trout Unlimited and Fly Fishing Team USA.
2. Produce a spectator oriented activity that will generate interest and enthusiasm for fly fishing with a strong emphasis on youth participation.
3. Provide a forum to discuss and distribute information on the protection and enhance of cold water resources.
4. Promote a catch & release mentality and conservation ethics.
5. Create learning and training opportunity for individuals that currently participate or would like to participate in fly fishing.

You can keep abreast of whatÕs happening by logging on to the CTU web site. We are looking for many volunteers and your participation would be most welcome.

CTU Annual Auction:
March 16

Colorado Trout Unlimited will hold its annual fund-raising auction on Thursday evening, March 16, 2006, at the Seawell Ballroom of the Denver Performing Arts Complex in downtown Denver. The auction is CTUÕs most important fund-raiser of the year and will help support our conservation work throughout 2006. The evening includes a buffet dinner, live and silent auctions for trips, equipment, and a variety of non-fishing items, and a variety of raffle prizes. Reserved Ògold tableÓ sponsorships with seating for 10 guests are available with a $500 contribution; advance individual tickets can also be reserved for $30. If you are interested in attending, or in contributing an item or trip to the auction, please contact CTUÕs David Nickum at 303-440-2937 ext. 12.

New Fishing Regulations
The Colorado Wildlife Commission recently adopted new fishing regulations for the five year period 2006-2010. Among the important revisions supported by CTU are a change in the definitions of Òartificial flies and luresÓ and ÒbaitÓ Ð anglers will no longer be able to use scented lures in artificial-only waters, so as to keep hooking mortality down and protect quality fisheries. New protective regulations will also go into effect on portions of the Cache la Poudre and on numerous cutthroat trout recovery streams in ColoradoÕs high country. When you get ready to fish in 2006, be sure to check your favorite waters in the CDOW regulations to be sure you have the most current information.
